Why do I need retainers?
- When your braces are removed, retainers will be necessary to maintain the new tooth positions. A very small amount of shifting will happen and is normal; however, if retainers are not used, the teeth have a high probability of shifting significantly out of position and undoing the hard work of straightening them!
How long will I need retainers?
- Retainers are needed long-term to maintain the tooth positions. Even many years after orthodontic treatment has been completed, the teeth may significantly shift if they are not kept in place by a retainer.
What types of retainers are available?
Removable Retainers:
- Removable retainers will maintain the tooth positions; however, they must be worn consistently about 8-10 hours per day.
- Care must be taken not to lose the retainers, and a lost or broken retainer needs to be replaced as soon as possible. If you lose or break your removable retainer, please call our office immediately to book an appointment for a replacement.
Bonded Lingual Retainers:
- Bonded lingual retainers are glued to the tongue side of the upper and lower front teeth. Because they are bonded to the teeth, they are always in place.
- Care must be taken when chewing certain hard foods, like hard candy, since these can cause the bonding material to break, requiring repair. If you break the bonding material, please call our office immediately to book an appointment for a repair.
Retainer Monitoring
- You will be followed for 24 months after the braces are removed. These periodic checks ensure the teeth are holding their positions and that the retainers are in good condition.
- Basic retainer repairs during this period are performed at no additional fee.
Periodic, Long-Term Maintenance
- Nothing lasts forever, and it is no different with orthodontic retainers. Removable retainers break down over time and bonded lingual retainers can come loose.
- After the 24 month monitoring period, it becomes your responsibility to monitor your retainers. If something feels off or suddenly different, please call our office to schedule an appointment immediately for a retainer check. Fees will apply for these services.
- Helpful Tip for Bonded Lingual Retainers: During regular cleanings and checkups with your general dentist, ask them to look at your bonded lingual retainers. If they see anything wrong, please call our office immediately to schedule a repair.
