More and more adults are seeking beautiful smiles. The stigma of braces when you are an adult has pretty much vanished. People of all ages and all walks of life are enjoying the benefits of straight teeth and an attractive smile.
Tooth movement can be done at any age as long as the supporting bone and gums are healthy. However, moving teeth in adults has some limitations. One of the biggest differences between adult and adolescent/teenage orthodontics is that in adults there is longer growth to work with. Certain tooth movements are therefore more challenging. Due to this fact, adult patients are often seen more frequently than adolescent patients.
There are a number of reasons adult orthodontics is desirable other than simply esthetics. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum disease, bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and biting surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.
When you arrive for your initial examination, a staff member will take several digital photos of your teeth. Dr. Stonecypher will examine your teeth and go over your photos with you as he explains your treatment options. A letter explaining your treatment plan will be written to your general dentist, as we like to work closely with them.
Approximately 15-20% of our patients are adults. Whether you are 20 or 80, it’s never too late to improve your smile!
